Hardening of the arteries, also referred to as atherosclerosis, occurs when there is a buildup of plaque in the walls of the arteries which results in the arteries becoming hardened and narrower.

Why Does Hardening of the Arteries Matter?

Hardening of the arteries can eventually result in heart attack or stroke, so it’s very important to prevent the condition. However, you needn’t be left in the dark on how to prevent hardening of the arteries.

I’m Heart Healthy Henry and I’m going to go over five ways for you to prevent this serious condition.

Step One to Preventing Hardening of the Arteries -- Exercise

Exercise is an extremely important part of preventing hardening of the arteries. You’ll want to exercise for a half an hour a day. Shoot for everyday, but at the minimum exercise three days out of the week. It’s okay to break up your half hour over three ten minute intervals or two fifteen minute intervals, just make sure your intervals total up to a half an hour each day.

Step Two to Preventing Hardening of the Arteries -- Proper Diet

Nothing is worse for your arteries than a super-sized sandwich from one of your favorite fast-food stops. High cholesterol foods contribute to plaque buildup in your arteries and therefore contribute to the hardening of the arteries.

To prevent hardening of the arteries, you’ll want to avoid foods that are high in fats and cholesterols and you’ll want to consume your fair share of vegetables and fruits and other foods high in fiber.

Step 3 to Preventing Hardening of the Arteries -- Dietary Supplements

In addition to eating right, dietary supplements are an important part of a healthy diet. If you want to prevent hardening of the arteries, you’ll want a dietary supplement that attacks your cholesterol. Supplements like the one available at will help reduce your LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) levels and will help prevent hardening of the arteries.

Step 4 to Preventing Hardening of the Arteries -- Stop Smoking

There are few things that are as bad for your health as smoking is. Not only does it harm your heart, it also harms your arteries and can even cause cancer. If you smoke, it’s extremely important that you stop. There are a number of smoking cessation aids available on the market. Step 5 to Preventing Hardening of the Arteries -- Lose Weight

The final step to preventing hardening of the arteries is to lose weight if you’re packing on some extra pounds. Eating right and exercising as per the steps above will help contribute to this final step. By maintaining an ideal weight, you’ll be helping your body in a number of ways, including preventing hardening of the arteries.
